Pete’s Pond is ALIVE in More Ways than One | 10/2025

The following is from Ali Baas, the Science Teacher at Dubois High School (DHS) who’s classes are studying Pete’s Pond in Dubois, WY.

“Dubois High School students have embarked on a scientific journey to discover what micro and macroorganisms are thriving in Pete’s Pond. Student’s, along with DAWGS members were curious about the biodiversity of the pond for sustaining trout.additionally have a paper poster to give you with awesome pie graphs on all species identified.”

Additionally, Ali writes the following:

The 2025 Ecology class designed a species richness study and collected data for the fall season. This initial baseline data gives us an idea of what is in the pond, but does not give us the amounts of each species.

Students designed, collected, and identified species in their sampling, learning about the scientific process, and biodiversity, as well as ecological practices and fundamentals of aquatic ecosystems.

Dubois High School envisions this study to evolve and be long term to continue to establish a better understanding of what lives in the pond, for the trout the students release each year through Trout in the Classroom, and for DAWGS/ Game and Fish scheduled releases.”
